The
isolated
southeasternmost
"finger"
of the
Peloponnese
below
Monemvasiá,
locally
known as
Vátika,
is
little
visited
by
tourists,
except
for the
area
around
Neápoli
, the
farthest
town
south in
mainland
Greece,
which
offers
access
to the
islet of
Elafónissos,
just
offshore,
and to
the
larger
islands
of
Kythira
and
Andikyithira,
midway
to Crete.
From
Monemvasiá
the
southerly
route
high
over the
central
ridge
via
Ellinikó
village
is the
slower
but more
attractive
of the
two
roads to
Neápoli
-
although
the
other,
longer
route is
being
widened
and
straightened.
