The
highest
peaks of
the
imposing
Helmós (Aroánia)
range
rear up
a dozen
or so
kilometres
to the
southeast
of
Kalávryta.
Mount
Helmós
itself,
at
2355m,
is only
50m
short of
the
summit
of
Taďyetos
to the
south.
However,
the walk
from
Kalávryta
is not
an
interesting
approach,
the
trail
having
vanished
under a
paved
road and
the new
ski
centre
(1900m)
approached
by it.
To get
the most
from
hiking
on the
mountain
you need
to climb
up from
the
village
of
Sólos
, on the
west
side - a
five-hour-plus
walk
which
takes
you to
the
Mavronéri
waterfall
, source
of the
legendary
Styx (Styga,
Stygós),
the
river
which
souls of
the dead
had to
cross in
order to
enter
Hades.
