The
Évros Valley , extending northeast of Alexandhroúpoli, is a prosperous but dull agricultural area. Most towns are ugly, modern concrete affairs full of bored soldiers, with little to delay you; others, such as
Souflí and
Dhidhymótiho , retain some character and medieval monuments, and the main route through the valley as far as
Orestiádha is well served by public transport, while the main road is being upgraded and bypasses are being built. The standout here by some way is the
Dhadhiá Forest and wildlife reserve, also reachable by bus; you'll need your own transport to head east from Alexandhroúpoli to the
Évros delta , one of Europe's most important wetland areas for birds - and one of Greece's most sensitive military areas.
