Lefkádha has four satellite islands clustered off its east coast, although only one, Meganíssi , the largest and most interesting, is accessible. Skorpiós , owned by the Onassis family, fields armed guards to deter visitors. Madhourí , owned by the family of poet Nanos Valaoritis, is private and similarly off-limits, while tiny Spárti is a large scrub-covered rock. Day-trips from Nydhrí skirt all three islands, and some stop to allow swimming in coves.
