When you finally emerge from the gorge, it's not long before you reach the singularly unattractive village of AYÍA ROUMÉLI , which is all but abandoned until you reach the beach, a mirage of iced drinks and a cluster of tavernas with rooms for rent. If you want to get back to Haniá, buy your boat tickets now, especially if you want an afternoon on the beach; the last boat (connecting with the final 6.30pm bus from Hóra Sfakíon) tends to sell out first. If you plan to stay on the south coast, you should get going as soon as possible for the best chance of finding a room somewhere nicer than Ayía Rouméli.
